I am 63, and some years ago I quietly stopped buying anything fitted. Not because of how it looked, but because of what fitted seems to mean once you are past a certain age — that it fits you at the shoulder, and the bust, and the waist, and the hip, and halfway down the thigh, all at once. You are aware of it in five places and you spend the day negotiating with it.

So I bought loose instead. And loose, worn often enough, stops reading as a choice and starts reading as giving up. That is the trade I had accepted, and I did not much like either half of it.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who pointed out that a dress does not have to fit you in more than one place, and sent me to a small family boutique here in South Carolina. Before I tell you what it did, I think you should read the Clarke family's letter first.

1The waist is the only place it fits

There is a proper seam at the waist and shaped panels above it, so the bodice follows you and the dress has a genuine line to it. And then it stops. Everything below that seam is released and touches nothing. Fitted is not a decision you have to make about the whole garment — it is a decision you can make about one inch of it, and almost nobody does.

2The skirt is a full circle

This is not a skirt gathered onto a band. It is cut as a circle, which takes several times the fabric and is the reason it falls away from you instead of hanging off you. Nothing below the waist is traced, outlined or suggested. You can sit, cross your legs, get in and out of a car and think about none of it, because there is simply that much cloth between you and the world.

3A mandarin collar, closed at the throat

A low band that stands at the base of the neck, with five small buttons below it and no more. It closes cleanly, so there is no neckline question to answer and nothing that falls open when you lean forward. It also draws one short vertical line at the throat, which is the quietest way there is to make somebody look up rather than across.

4Pockets, which only work because of the skirt

A fitted dress cannot usually have pockets — anything you put in one shows immediately, so makers leave them out. Here the skirt is so full that a pocket disappears entirely into the folds, and your hand with it. It is the one place where all that cloth pays you back twice: once for the way it falls, and once for somewhere to put your hands.

5Linen, so the weight does the work

A skirt this wide in a light synthetic would float about and cling on a windy day. Linen has weight to it, so all that width hangs properly, swings when you walk and settles again the moment you stop. It is also the cloth that stays cool in the heat and looks better creased than pressed, which is a rare thing to be able to say about a floor-length dress.

6One white, and a size for you — S to 2XL

The Thelma is made in white only. That is not us running short of ideas — a dress cut this cleanly needs a cloth with nothing on it, and white is the one that lets you see the shaping rather than a pattern. Sizes run S, M, L, XL and 2XL. Because the bodice is genuinely fitted, this is the one dress we would ask you to check the size chart on rather than guessing.
