A Letter From a Reader Adriana S
The sweater that made me feel like an artist wearing her own painting.
On the Adriana — the wildflower knit that is soft enough to forget you have it on, warm without adding an inch, and a print that has strangers stopping you in the grocery store.
I am 63 years old, and for the past few winters getting dressed had quietly become a chore I dreaded. Everything I owned was either too scratchy to bear for a whole day or so thick it turned me into a barrel the moment I put it on. So I gave up and reached for the same plain dark pullovers, one after the other, week after week.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1Soft against the skin — you forget you have it on.

We chose a fine, long-fiber knit for the Adriana so it lies gently against the skin instead of scratching. You feel it at the cuffs, at the inner arms, along the back of the neck — and all you feel is soft. No itch, no redness, no reaching underneath to pull the collar away from your skin by lunchtime.
2Warm without adding a single inch.
We knit the Adriana fine on purpose. It lies along the body instead of building up around it — no stiff bulk at the bust, no heavy cable adding volume at the shoulders. You stay warm without looking as though you are wearing a duvet. The kind of sweater you can put on in the morning and feel comfortable in all day, not just in the cold car park.
3Still looks new after ten washes.

We use the same long, fine fibers that make the Adriana so soft to keep it from pilling. Short, cheap fibers rub against themselves and ball up after three washes — you have seen it, that grey cloud of fuzz that turns a nice sweater into a tired one. The Adriana's ribbed cuffs and hem spring back into shape wash after wash.
4A print that lifts your face — and gets you noticed.

The Adriana is covered in a painterly all-over wildflower meadow — yellow daisies, purple alliums, red poppies, pink cosmos and soft greens, all rendered in the loose, impressionist style of a watercolor painting. It sits right against the face, and a warm, colorful print near the face is the quickest thing there is for looking less tired and more alive. People will notice. They will ask you where it's from.
5Covered from shoulder to wrist — all day long.

The Adriana's sleeves are cut long and roomy enough to fall right to the wrist without straining — no hiking up, no cold gap above the hand. The sleeve is easy to pull on and does not pinch under the arm or catch awkwardly when you take it off. What you want covered stays covered, from the shoulder all the way down, in a fabric light enough to wear all day.
6Works with everything already in your closet.
We kept the Adriana's silhouette simple — a clean crew neck, a straight hem — so the print does all the work and the rest of it pairs with anything you already own. Dark jeans. Straight-leg trousers. A simple skirt. Wear it to church or to the market; it looks deliberate either way, without asking you to rethink your whole wardrobe around it.
The Adriana, against the sweaters you have been buying.

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Adriana at $123.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every sweater is going out at well below half of what it was.
I ordered mine that same evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short note from the family tucked inside on a printed card. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since — and I have had more compliments in six weeks than in the six years before it.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many winters feeling scratchy, shapeless, and a little dull — and this one sweater quietly changed all of that. Soft enough to forget it is there, warm enough to mean it, and a print that makes you feel like you chose something beautiful on purpose. I hope you find your size before it clears.
