The one dress i reach for every single day — and yes, it has pockets.

On the soft 100% cotton A-line that finally does it all — big front pockets, three-quarter sleeves that cover the upper arms, a gentle notched neckline and button placket, and four colors you'll want them all.

Woman wearing the soft blue Amelia pocket dress
The Amelia Pocket Dress, in soft blue — easy, covered, and pockets I actually use.

I am 63 years old, and getting dressed had quietly become a chore. My closet was full of things that were almost right — pretty but stiff and hot, or comfortable but shapeless — and every morning I stood there and sighed. I had all but given up on the idea of one dress I could just reach for and feel put-together in.

What I quietly wanted was simple: one easy dress that was soft against the skin, covered my upper arms, skimmed over the middle instead of clinging — and, please, had real pockets I could put my keys and phone in. But the beautiful ones never had pockets, and the comfortable ones never looked like much. Nothing was both.

Then a friend of mine wore the most effortless dress to lunch — a lovely soft blue, buttons at the collar, and her hands tucked into real front pockets — and told me she now owned it in three colors. I asked her at once. She told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The dress is called the Amelia Pocket Dress, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1And yes — big, real front pockets

A woman with her hands in the Amelia dress's big front patch pockets

We stitched two big, real patch pockets right onto the front of the skirt — the kind you can actually slide a phone, your keys, or your reading glasses into. Not the decorative kind that fit nothing. It means you can move through the whole day with your hands free and leave the little bag at home.

★★★★★"Big, real pockets on a dress this easy — I couldn't believe it. A pocket, at my age, is a love language."Patricia L., Columbia SC

2100% cotton — cool and breathable

A hand holding the Amelia dress's 100% cotton fabric label

We made the Amelia from real, breathable 100% cotton — no polyester. It's the difference between a dress that lets the air straight through and one that traps the heat and sticks to you. It stays cool and soft against the skin on the warmest days, and it washes and wears the way only real cotton does.

★★★★★"Real 100% cotton — cool and soft all day, not that sticky polyester. I wear mine in the worst of the summer heat."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3Three-quarter sleeves that cover the upper arms

The Amelia dress's three-quarter sleeves covering the upper arms

The soft three-quarter sleeves come down past the elbow and cover the upper arm — the part most of us would rather keep to ourselves — while the lighter length keeps you from ever overheating. Covered where it counts, comfortable, with no cardigan to drag along.

★★★★★"Sleeves that finally cover my upper arms, and I still stay cool. Finally, I feel comfortable and covered at the same time."Carol R., Charleston SC

4A relaxed A-line that skims, never clings

We cut the Amelia as an easy A-line with a gently raised waist, so it falls soft and straight and skims right over the middle and the hips instead of clinging. It moves beautifully when you walk and feels wonderfully unfussy — put-together without a single thing pulling or gripping.

★★★★★"So easy and flattering — it skims everything I'd rather not show. I feel graceful, not gripped."Diane M., Greenville SC

5A soft neckline and button placket, in four colors

A gently notched neckline and a soft three-button placket give it a put-together look — easy to slip on, easy to dress up with a scarf or down with sandals. It's the little detail that lets one dress carry you from the market to a lunch out. Offered in four colors: blue, purple, orange and black — the kind of thing you end up wanting in more than one.

6It fits the body you have

We make the Amelia from a size S all the way to 2XL and cut it true to size, relaxed on purpose. It is meant to fit the woman — not to make the woman fit the dress.

★★★★★"I usually dread ordering online at my size. It fit like it was made for me."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Amelia at $179.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every dress is going out at a fraction of that.

I ordered the blue. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But getting dressed had become a chore for so long — and this one easy 100% cotton dress, with its big front pockets, its covered upper arms and that soft button placket, quietly made mornings simple again. If that sounds like you, I hope you get yours before it clears.
