My granddaughter got married in June, and I spent five weeks looking for something to wear. Five weeks. I am 63 and I have been to a great many weddings, and I still could not solve it.

Because there are only two kinds of evening dress made for a woman my age. There is the jacket-and-shell set in dusty pink that adds fifteen years the moment you fasten it. And there is the fitted one — boned somewhere, lined in something stiff, which you are poured into at six o'clock and cannot eat a thing in by nine.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who told me to stop looking at the mother-of-the-bride rack and try a small family boutique here in South Carolina. Before I tell you what it did, I think you should read the Clarke family's letter first.

1The waist is made by the drape, not by a seam

Every fitted evening dress makes its waist by construction — a seam, boning, a lining that grips. We make ours by drawing the satin across the body and gathering it to one side, where it is caught and held. The pleats radiate out from that point and the shape comes from the fabric itself. You get a defined waist and there is nothing there to press on you.

2Below the gather it is completely free

Everything under that one point falls away from the body with no shaping at all. Nothing is lined tight, nothing is cut close over the hip, and nothing needs discreetly loosening between the dinner and the dancing. It is the difference between an evening you get through and an evening you are actually present at.

3The jewelry is already on it

At the gather point sits a crystal ornament, and it is doing real work — it holds the pleats and it puts the sparkle at your waist rather than at your throat. Combined with a high boat neck, it means the dress arrives finished. No necklace to find, nothing to match, nothing hunted for at half past five while everybody waits in the car.

4Sleeves that flare instead of grip

Evening wear is nearly always bare-armed, and the women who write to us are tired of buying a wrap to carry all night. The Annalena is cut in one piece through the shoulder into a wide sleeve that flares away to the elbow. There is no seam sitting on the shoulder and nothing close to the arm. 5Satin with enough weight to hold the folds
