A Letter From a Reader

The one blouse that has people telling me I look well.

On the painterly rainbow-and-heart blouse that keeps a long day to itself, covers the arms, needs no tucking, and opens at the throat. The blouse I now reach for first.

The Aurelia — rainbow arcs and a big pink heart, right where they count.

I am 63 years old, and getting dressed for anything beyond my own kitchen had become a small daily dread. My blouses were either pale and plain, the kind that show every little mark of a warm afternoon, or so fussy about tucking and buttons that I gave up before I started. So I settled for the same safe navy top, week after week.

It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking bright, cheerful and completely at ease at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The blouse is called the Aurelia, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1Nobody will know but you

A woman seated at a garden lunch table in the buttoned Aurelia print blouse

We chose a busy, painterly print on purpose — sweeping arcs of coral, sunshine yellow, teal and soft blue — and cut the Aurelia relaxed, with room through the arms, so it sits a little away from you. Whatever a long, warm afternoon brings, the blouse keeps it to itself.

★★★★★I wore it to a long outdoor luncheon in August, and it looked just as fresh leaving as arriving.Diane M., Greenville SC

2A color that lifts your face

A blouse sits right under your face, so we refused the washed-out grays and beiges. The Aurelia is all warm, happy shades — coral, sunshine yellow, teal and a big soft-pink heart — that bring a little color back to your cheeks the moment you put it on.

3Sleeves that cover the upper arms

Close-up of the Aurelia's roomy full-length sleeve pushed up to the elbow

We cut the sleeves full length and roomy through the upper arm, so they cover what most of us would rather keep to ourselves without ever feeling tight. On a warm day, push them up to the elbow — the tops of the arms stay covered either way.

★★★★★No cardigan over it all summer. At my age, having my arms covered without feeling bundled up is everything.Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Worn out, not tucked in — that's how it's cut

Close-up of the Aurelia's straight hem worn loose over light jeans

We gave the Aurelia a straight hem meant to be worn out, falling loose over the middle and finishing neatly just past the hip. There is no deciding whether to tuck, and nothing to keep straightening — it simply hangs the way it should.

★★★★★I haven't tucked a blouse in years, and I never have to with this one. It just looks finished.Carol R., Charleston SC

5Open at the throat, covered where it counts

A woman by a sunny window fastening pearls at the Aurelia's open pointed collar

It is made with a soft pointed collar that sits open at the throat, so nothing presses against your neck and there is room for a favorite necklace. Buttoned, it stays modest across the chest — it opens up your face, never your neckline.

★★★★★Finally a collar I can wear my mother's pearls with, and nothing tugging at my throat all afternoon.Patricia L., Columbia SC

6From lunch with friends to supper out

We designed it to work twice. Buttoned on its own, it is right for lunch with friends; worn open over a plain black top, it becomes a light layer for supper out. One blouse, two occasions — in sizes S to 5XL.

★★★★★Buttoned for my granddaughter's recital, open over black for dinner after. Nobody guessed it was the same blouse.Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Aurelia at $324.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every blouse is going out at less than a third of that.

I ordered mine that same evening. It came a few days later in a kraft-paper box, folded in cream tissue with a little printed card from the Clarke family on top. I wore it to church that Sunday.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years in pale, plain blouses, wondering what showed and whether to tuck. This one cheerful blouse took all of that off my mind — and people tell me I look well again. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
