A letter from a reader Avery Puffer
The lightweight puffer that keeps me warm without the marshmallow look.
On the neat quilted puffer that's warm without the bulk, has a stand collar against the wind, covers the arms, and has real pockets for cold hands. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.
I am 63 years old, and I dreaded the cold every year for one silly reason: the warm coats made me look enormous. The puffers that actually kept me warm were great bulky things that added pounds and crackled when I moved, and the sleek coats that looked nice left me shivering at the bus stop. So every winter I chose between warm and shapeless, or smart and freezing.
What I wanted was one jacket that was genuinely warm but neat — something light that did not balloon out, that covered my arms, kept the wind off my neck, and had somewhere warm to put my hands. Warm and tidy, not warm and enormous.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant came in from the cold in the neatest little red puffer, warm as toast and not a bit bulky. I asked her about it. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.
The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The jacket is called the Avery, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1Warm, without the marshmallow bulk

We filled the Avery to be genuinely warm, but kept the quilting neat and the shape close, so it sits trim and easy instead of ballooning out. All the cozy warmth of a puffer, with none of the bulk that adds pounds and swallows you whole.
2A stand collar that keeps the chill off

We gave it a tall, padded stand collar that pops up around the neck to keep the wind and chill out — a snug bit of warmth right where you feel the cold first, with a turtleneck peeking above it. No scarf required.
3Real pockets that warm your hands

We set proper side pockets into the front, deep and cozy, the kind your cold hands dive straight into and that hold your phone, keys and gloves. Warm hands and nothing to carry — a small comfort you reach for all winter.
4Five colors to brighten the gray days

We made the Avery in five colors — a cheerful red, a classic navy, a sunny yellow, a black and a soft cream — so you can have a bit of color on a gray winter day, or keep it classic. A warm jacket that lifts your spirits as well as your temperature.
5Covered arms, easy snaps, machine washable
We gave it full sleeves that cover the arms, an easy snap front you can do up in a moment, and made it from a fabric that goes straight in the machine. Warm, covered, and no fuss — the everyday jacket you grab without a second thought.
6It fits the body you have
We make the Avery from an XS all the way to 3XL and cut it with a relaxed, easy shape, roomy enough to layer a sweater underneath. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the jacket.

Why they're clearing it now

They priced the Avery at $214.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.
I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.
