A letter from a reader Blanche S
The one coat that makes people think you dressed on purpose.
On the tailored black coat with a proper notch lapel, large easy-grip buttons, and a length that actually covers you — the coat I now reach for without thinking.
I am 63 years old, and getting dressed for anything beyond my own kitchen had become an exercise in disappointment. Nothing I owned looked quite right — either too casual for a dinner out or too stiff to wear to the farmers' market. I'd been grabbing the same tired fleece for two years and calling it good enough.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1For six months of the year, this is what people see.

We cut the Blanche in a deep, rich black that reads as timeless rather than severe — the kind of color that goes with everything you already own and doesn't date from one season to the next. From October to April, the coat is what the world sees of you. We wanted that to count for something.
2You stop noticing you're wearing it.
A heavy coat is the one you take off the moment you sit down — and eventually stop bothering to put on at all. We cut the Blanche in a wool-blend that gives you a proper, substantial drape without that dragging weight on the shoulders. It hangs neatly, moves with you, and still feels like something at the end of a long day of errands.
3Right for the supermarket and for supper out.

The notch lapel is the detail that does it — sharp enough to look intentional at a restaurant, relaxed enough that you don't feel overdressed picking up groceries. We designed the Blanche to move between a Tuesday morning at the market and a Friday evening out without asking you to change a thing.
4Closes first time, every time.

We chose three large, substantial buttons for the Blanche — wide enough to grip easily with cold hands, with firm buttonholes that hold them in place all day. No fumbling at the door, no button that won't stay closed when the wind picks up. It closes cleanly, and it stays that way.
5No cold gap when you bend down.

We cut the Blanche to fall just at the knee — long enough to cover the lower back when you bend to unload the car or reach for the bottom shelf, practical enough that it doesn't catch on stairs or get in the way getting in and out of a seat. The length that actually protects you, not just the length that looks right on a hanger.
6Still looks new when spring comes.
The Blanche is cut in a tightly woven wool-blend that resists pilling at the cuffs and pockets — the two places every coat shows its age first. The buttons are stitched to hold through a full season, and the seams lie flat after repeated wearing. Put it on in October; it should still look right in March.
The Blanche, against the coats you've been buying.

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Blanche at $235.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every coat is going out at well below half of what it was.
I ordered mine the evening my friend told me about it. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel, folded neatly in cream tissue — the kind of unboxing that makes you feel like you've done something right. I have reached for it more than anything else in my coat closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too long grabbing the same tired fleece because nothing else felt quite right — and this coat quietly fixed that, without making a fuss about it. If that sounds familiar, I hope you find your size before it clears.
