A Letter From a Reader

The romantic floral maxi that covers my arms and gives me a waist.

On the soft cream floral dress whose long sleeves cover the arms, whose empire waist defines the middle, and whose flowing skirt skims the rest — romantic, elegant, and quietly expensive-looking. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.

The Calista cream floral-tapestry maxi dress
The Calista — the romantic dress that covers my arms and still gives me a shape.

I am 63 years old, and I have always loved a romantic, floaty dress — but they and I had come to a quiet standoff. The beautiful long-sleeved ones hung like a sack and gave me no shape at all. The ones that gave me a waist were sleeveless, and left my arms bare when I most wanted them covered. It seemed I could have romance, or a waist, or covered arms — but never all three in one dress.

What I wanted was that one dress: something soft and romantic, with a beautiful print, that covered my arms, gave me a defined waist, and floated over everything else. Elegant and flattering and covered, all at once.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant arrived at an evening do in the most beautiful cream floral maxi, long sleeves and all, looking romantic and completely at ease. I finally asked her about it. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The dress is called the Calista, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A romantic floral print

Angled flat lay of the cream floral maxi on a natural linen background

We built the Calista around a soft, romantic floral-tapestry print — roses, scrolls and an arched border in gentle golds, sage and blush, like a faded old tapestry. Rich and pretty and quietly expensive, the kind of dress people lean in to admire.

★★★★★"The print is so romantic, like a beautiful old tapestry. Everyone asks where I found it — it looks far dearer than it was."Carol R., Charleston SC

2An empire waist that gives you a shape

The empire waist with its decorative trim band

We set a decorative trim band at the empire waist, just under the bust, so it defines the narrowest part and lets the skirt fall away from there. A real, flattering shape — never a straight-hanging sack — with nothing tight or gripping to do it.

★★★★★"The waist sits just under the bust and gives me a lovely shape. It skims everything below — so flattering."Diane M., Greenville SC

3Long sleeves that cover the arm

The long billowy sleeve with a ruffled cuff

We gave it a soft, long billowy sleeve that covers the arm all the way to a pretty ruffled cuff at the wrist. The arms stay covered and graceful — a rare and lovely thing on a dress this romantic — and the airy sleeve keeps it from ever feeling heavy.

★★★★★"Long sleeves that cover my arms, on a dress this beautiful — I had almost given up finding that. The ruffle cuff is lovely."Linda K., Beaufort SC

4A flowing cut that skims

The flowing A-line skirt falling softly from the empire waist

We cut the skirt full and flowing from that high waist, so it drifts and skims over the tummy and hips instead of clinging, all the way to the ankle. Graceful with every step, and forgiving exactly where you want it.

★★★★★"It floats over everything and moves so beautifully when I walk. Elegant and comfortable at the same time."Janet S., Bluffton SC

5A soft, flattering V neckline

We finished it with a soft V neckline that lengthens the neck and frames the face — wear it as it is, or slip a little camisole underneath for a touch more coverage. Either way, it flatters and feels romantic.

★★★★★"The V is so flattering, and I pop a lace cami underneath. It frames my face and feels elegant, never too low."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Calista from an XS all the way to XXL and cut it to drape softly from the empire waist and flatter a real figure. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the dress.

★★★★★"I usually dread ordering online at my size. It draped beautifully and skimmed all the right places. I felt romantic and elegant."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Calista at $149.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had believed you could have a romantic dress, or a defined waist, or covered arms — never all three at once — and this one soft floral maxi gave me all of it. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
