There are days when you want to be taken seriously. Not many, at 63, but they exist — the family meeting about my mother's house, the lunch where somebody needs to hear no from me, the funeral where I was the eldest one there.

And the only thing anybody offers you for those days is a black pantsuit. Which does work. It also makes me look like I have come to audit somebody, and it adds a decade, and I have never once put it on and felt like myself in it.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who pointed out that the authority comes from the structure and not from the color, and told me to look at a set from a small family boutique here in South Carolina. Before I tell you what it did, I think you should read the Clarke family's letter first.

What makes something read as a suit is not the color. It is one cloth running the whole way down you without a break — that is the entire trick, and it works in paisley satin exactly as it works in gray wool. 2It tucks in, and that is deliberate

Almost everything made for women our age is cut loose and left to hang, and there are days that is exactly right. This is for the other days. You should be able to reach for it when you want it.

3The belt is cut from the same cloth

It comes with the set, made from the same printed satin, through proper belt loops with a plain rectangular buckle. That matters more than it sounds. Nobody owns a belt that goes with a burgundy paisley — you would hunt for one for a month and end up defaulting to black, which undoes the whole line. So we made it and put it in the box.

4A real shirt, so it comes apart

The top is not a soft blouse. It is a shirt — pointed collar, buttons the whole way down, a proper cuff that buttons at the wrist. Which means it holds its shape tucked in, and it also means it works entirely on its own. Wear the shirt with jeans and the pants with a plain black sweater and you have three outfits in the box instead of one.

5Wide to the floor, with pockets

Everything above the waist is structured. Everything below it is not. The pants are cut wide the entire way down and fall to the floor, so the leg is completely free and nothing is close to you anywhere. And there are real side pockets in them, which almost nothing in satin has and which every woman who has stood at an event with nothing to do with her hands understands immediately.

6Four colorways, and a size for you — XS to 2XL

The Cecilia comes in four colorways and the one you see me wearing is the burgundy, which is the warmest of them. There is a dark one for anyone who wants the black suit feeling without the black suit, a blue and a soft blush besides. Sizes run XS, S, M, L, XL and 2XL.
