A Letter From a Reader Charlene S
The sweater that makes people stop and ask.
On the Charlene — a lush botanical print on a soft, warm sweatshirt with contrast denim trim that looks like a put-together outfit the moment you pull it on.
I am 63 years old, and I had quietly given up on my clothes doing anything for me. Everything in my closet was either comfortable or interesting, never both — and most mornings I just reached for the safe, plain top and got on with my day.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1A print that gets noticed — for all the right reasons

We covered the Charlene in a lush botanical tapestry print — roses, peonies and wildflowers in deep red, warm gold, soft cream and sage green, all on a rose-pink ground. It is the kind of print that reads as beautiful and considered from across a room, not loud or busy. Women will stop you to ask where you got it. We made that the point.
2Warm without the bulk
We cut the Charlene with a relaxed but not oversized body — it falls along the shape instead of swallowing it. The knit is substantial enough to be genuinely warm, but the silhouette stays clean and flattering. You do not come out looking like you are wearing a blanket. It just looks like a woman who dressed with intention.
3The denim trim that does the work of a whole outfit

We stitched a contrast denim-blue yoke across the shoulders and a matching denim cuff and hem band into every Charlene. That one detail makes it look like you planned the whole thing — the way a denim jacket layered over a floral top does — except it is one piece, pulled on in thirty seconds. No extra layers, no decisions.
4Covered from shoulder to wrist

We cut the sleeves to run all the way to the wrist and finish in a neat denim cuff. The sleeve is roomy enough not to strain at the upper arm or feel tight at the elbow — just covered, comfortably, without thinking about it. No cardigan needed. No reaching for something to throw over your shoulders the moment the air conditioning comes on.
5Slips on — no wrestling, no fuss

We gave the Charlene a dropped shoulder and a roomy crew neck opening so it goes over the head without a fight — no pinching under the arms, no catching on earrings, no straining at the shoulders. It comes off just as easily. For a sweater you plan to reach for every other day, that matters more than it sounds.
6Goes with everything already in your closet
We chose a color palette — rose-pink, soft red, warm gold and denim blue — that pairs with the things most women already own: dark wash jeans, camel trousers, a simple white tee underneath. You do not need anything new. You just add the Charlene and the outfit is done.

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Charlene at $123.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every sweater is going out at less than half of what it was.
I ordered mine the evening I heard about it. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel — tucked in cream tissue, with that little printed card from the family on top. I wore it two days after it arrived and have reached for it more than anything else since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many mornings pulling on the same forgettable top and telling myself it was fine — when really I just missed feeling like myself. This sweater is the one piece I put on and immediately feel like I made a decision. If that sounds familiar at all, I hope you find your size before it clears.
