A Letter From a Reader

The big, slouchy cardigan I disappear into and still look put-together.

On the oversized knit that wraps you up cozy but skims instead of swamping, covers the arms, and has a soft hood to pull up — in five colors. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.

The Clara oversized hooded knit cardigan worn open
The Clara — big and cozy, and somehow still pulled-together.

I am 63 years old, and my favorite thing to wear has always been the big, soft cardigan I could wrap myself in of an evening. The trouble was that every one I owned made me look like I had given up — a shapeless heap of wool with a person somewhere inside it.

So I kept the cozy one for the sofa, out of sight, and put on something stiffer and less comfortable whenever anyone might actually see me. It seemed a shame, choosing between comfortable and presentable every single day.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant came in wearing the biggest, softest cardigan — and looked wonderful in it, not swamped at all. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The cardigan is called the Clara, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1Big and cozy, but it still skims

The oversized cardigan hanging open in two long panels

We cut the Clara big and slouchy on purpose, but worn open it falls in two long lines down the front, so it wraps you up cozy without swamping you. Oversized comfort with a shape to it — not a shapeless heap.

★★★★★"Big and cozy, but worn open it still has a shape. I disappear into it and somehow look put-together."Diane M., Greenville SC

2Full sleeves that cover the arms

The full knit sleeve to a soft ribbed cuff

We gave it full, easy sleeves that cover the arms down to a ribbed cuff, roomy enough to push up or pull down as you like. Covered and comfortable, with nothing gripping the arm anywhere.

★★★★★"Lovely full sleeves that cover my arms, and I can push them up when I like. So comfortable."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3A soft hood to pull up

We added a soft knit hood you can actually pull up on a cold evening, or leave to sit easy at the shoulders. It is the cozy finishing touch that turns a cardigan into the thing you never want to take off.

★★★★★"The hood is so cozy on a cold night. I pull it up on the porch and never quite want to come inside."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Big, round wooden buttons

The row of large round wooden buttons

We ran big, round wooden buttons down the front — the kind that fasten in a moment and feel solid under your fingers. Do them up when the chill sets in, or wear it open over a tee the way most women do.

★★★★★"The big wooden buttons feel expensive and fasten so easily. Nobody believes me when I say what I paid."Carol R., Charleston SC

5Soft and cozy, in five colors

Angled flat lay of the cardigan in several colors on linen

We knit it soft and cozy and make it in five easy colors, from this soft pink to a warm brown, a soft blue and more — the kind that go with the jeans you already live in. A woman is bound to ask you where you found it.

★★★★★"A woman asked me where I got it the first day I wore it. At 63, I had forgotten what that felt like."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Clara from a size S all the way to 2XL and cut it oversized on purpose, with plenty of room. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the cardigan.

★★★★★"I usually dread ordering knitwear online at my size. It fit like it was made for me."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Clara at $149.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had spent years choosing between the cozy cardigan I loved and one I could be seen in — and this one is finally both. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your color before it clears.
