A letter from a reader colorful-pull-overs
Cozy, covered, and for once not a plain gray sweatshirt.
On the pullovers that skim instead of clinging, cover the arms, and keep you warm — without being the same flat gray thing everyone already owns. Why a small South Carolina family made them this way, and why they're clearing them now.
I am 63 years old, and my cold-weather drawer had quietly turned into a stack of gray. Comfortable, warm enough, and completely forgettable. I reached for the same shapeless sweatshirt every morning because it was easy, and told myself easy was all I could ask for.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up in something warm and easy that still looked like she had chosen it. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.
The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. They call these the Colorful Pullovers, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1A cut that skims, never clings

We cut these relaxed and roomy through the body and the arms, so they skim over you instead of gripping anywhere. You get the ease of a sweatshirt without the shapeless, swamped look most of them settle for.
2Sleeves that cover the arms — to the wrist

We gave every one full-length sleeves that cover the arms down to a ribbed cuff at the wrist. Nothing grips the upper arm, and nothing slides down over your hands when you drop your arms.
3Warm without the weight of a coat

We made these to be the warm layer you actually reach for — soft and substantial, several of them lined or brushed for real coziness against a cold morning. Warm enough to matter, without the weight of pulling on a coat indoors.
4Real texture, color and print

We gave every design real texture and color instead of a flat, plain finish — quilting, waffle knit, sherpa, color-blocking, a print worth a second look. Not one of them is the gray sweatshirt everyone already has in a drawer.
5Thirty-one designs, one price
We made thirty-one of them, from a zip-up sherpa jacket to a floral crew and a patchwork collar, and put them all at a single price. Whichever one suits you and your day, it costs the same.
6It fits the body you have
We make these across the full range of sizes, which varies a little from design to design, and cut them relaxed on purpose. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the sweatshirt.

Why they're clearing them now

These came in at full price and sold at it all season — some of them well over two hundred dollars. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one of them is going out at a single price of $59.95, for several of them less than a third of what they were.
I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had quietly let my cold-weather drawer turn into a stack of forgettable gray — and these reminded me that warm and easy do not have to mean invisible. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before they clear.
