A Letter From a Reader Corrine S
The one cardigan I reach for without thinking.
On the washed-denim open-front with double ruffle trim that slips on in seconds, falls in two straight lines, and looks nothing like what your mother had in her closet.
I am 63 years old, and getting dressed had quietly become an exercise in compromise. The pieces I liked best either showed too much arm or felt stiff and fussy; the comfortable ones made me feel like I was disappearing into them. I had started layering the same old navy zip-up over everything, and even I knew it wasn't doing me any favors.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1Off in a second, back on just as fast.

We designed the Corinne to open completely — no buttons, no zipper, nothing to catch or fumble with. When the room warms up mid-conversation, you slip it from your shoulders in one smooth motion and the conversation goes right on. It is back on just as quickly. That is the whole point of an open-front cardigan, and we built this one to do it without a second thought.
2Two straight lines from shoulder to hem.
We cut the Corinne so the front panels hang in two clean vertical lines — straight down from the shoulder, with enough ease across the chest that the edges never curl away or flare open. That straight fall is deliberate. It skims exactly where most of us would rather not draw attention, without being tight, without being shapeless. Two vertical lines, all the way down.
3The ruffle that changes the whole feel.

We ran a double ruffle along the cuffs and the hem — two gathered tiers of the same washed-denim fabric, soft and slightly lived-in. It is the detail that makes someone look twice and ask where you found it. Nothing fussy, nothing overdone — just enough to make the Corinne feel like a considered choice rather than something you grabbed on the way out.
4The sleeveless dress you stopped wearing becomes wearable again.

The batwing sleeves cover the tops of the arms and fall to three-quarter length — the exact part most of us quietly stopped showing. Throw the Corinne over a sleeveless dress, a blouse, a linen tank — it covers what you'd rather keep covered, in a fabric light enough to wear all day without overheating. The rest of your closet becomes useful again.
5Nothing about it says cardigan in the old sense.

The washed denim-look fabric, the ruffle trim, the soft batwing shape — none of it reads the way a cardigan used to. This is not the boxy, pilling thing from twenty years ago. It is closer to a jacket in the way it carries itself — relaxed and easy, but with a bit of personality. You put it on and it looks like you dressed with intention, because you did.
6Goes over everything you already own.
We cut it to layer — over the tee, the blouse, the sundress, the linen shirt. The washed blue works with navy, white, cream, tan, gray, and most prints you already have at home. One piece that makes the things in your closet more useful, not less.
The Corinne, against the cardigans you've been buying.
| Typical cardigan | The Corinne | |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Flares open or buttons pull | Falls in two straight lines |
| Arms | Too short, or bare at the top | Batwing sleeves cover the tops |
| Detail | Plain edge, no finish | Double ruffle trim at cuffs and hem |
| Feel | Stiff, or pilling after one wash | Soft washed-denim look, stays that way |
| Versatility | Works with one or two things | Layers over everything you own |

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Corinne at $135.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every cardigan is going out at well below half of what it was.
I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel, folded in tissue with a card from the family tucked on top. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since — over a tee in the morning, over a blouse when I go out, and once, on a warm evening, over nothing but a sundress I hadn't worn in three years.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many mornings reaching for the same tired zip-up because nothing else felt right — and this one cardigan quietly changed that. It covers what I'd rather not show, it looks like I made an effort, and I can take it off in the middle of supper without anyone blinking. If that sounds like your mornings too, I hope you find your size before it clears.
