A Letter From a Reader

The hooded cardigan that wears like a blanket and looks like a coat

A texture worked into the pile, a hood for the chill, and buttons instead of a fight to get out of it.

Sandra wearing the Elena hooded cardigan in beige
The Elena in Beige. It has replaced both my house cardigan and my school-run coat.

I am 63, and I had two things hanging by the back door. A shapeless cardigan I wore around the house and would never have answered the door in, and a proper coat that was too much for a walk to the mailbox. Between the two of them, they covered about half of my day, and neither one made me feel like anything.

I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who said I did not need a third thing, I needed one thing that did both jobs. Then she sent me a link one evening with three words: just read it.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The cardigan is called the Elena, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A texture you can see from across the room

The raised diamond texture of the Elena hooded cardigan

The Elena is not a flat fleece with a pattern printed over it. The diamonds and cables are worked into the pile itself, raised and soft, so the light catches them the way it catches a hand-knitted stitch. It is what stops a cream cardigan from reading as plain, and it is the thing women ask about first.

★★★★★"Two women have asked me who knitted it. Nobody knitted it, but I understand why they asked."Diane M., Greenville SC

2A cozy hood to keep the chill off

The soft hood of the Elena cardigan

The hood is attached and cut roomy, in the same soft pile as the rest. Up, it takes the chill off your ears and the back of your neck on a walk. Down, it sits like a soft collar behind you and gives the shoulders a little weight, so the whole thing hangs properly instead of slipping back.

★★★★★"I pull the hood up for the dog and put it down at the shop. No hat, no scarf, no flattened hair."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3Soft, warm and genuinely cozy

The pile holds warmth the way a good blanket does, and it stays soft against you all day — no scratch at the neck, nothing rough at the wrists. Women tell us they put it on with the coffee at seven and are still in it at nine in the evening, which is exactly what we hoped for when we made it.

★★★★★"It is like being wrapped in a blanket that somebody tailored. I have it on from breakfast until bed."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Long sleeves that cover your arms

The long sleeve of the Elena cardigan

The sleeves run the full length of the arm, cut wide enough that nothing grips at the upper arm and long enough that your wrists stay covered when you reach for the car door. Push them back while you cook and the pile holds the fold; let them down and you are covered again from shoulder to hand.

★★★★★"Covered to the wrist and not tight anywhere on the arm. I have stopped dressing around my arms."Carol R., Charleston SC

5A relaxed, oversized cut

The relaxed oversized fit of the Elena

We cut the Elena loose and long on purpose. It falls past the hip, skims straight down instead of gripping at the middle, and there is room underneath for a proper sweater without anything pulling across the back. Oversized here means room to move, not a shape that swallows you.

★★★★★"Room for a sweater underneath and it still hangs beautifully. It covers me exactly where I want covering."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6Buttons, so it goes on and comes off easily

A row of buttons down the front, and nothing to pull over your head. You put an arm in each sleeve and you are done. Do them up on a cold walk, leave them open indoors, and undo two at the bottom when you sit down to dinner. We make the Elena from a size S to a 2XL, cut on the same easy lines throughout.

★★★★★"On and off without messing up my hair, and I can wear it open or done up. That is two garments to me."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Elena at $279.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than a third of that.

Mine came in a kraft box on a Tuesday, folded in white tissue. I buttoned it up in the bedroom and wore it out to the mailbox in the same hour.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent years with a cardigan I hid in and a coat that was too much for the mailbox — and this one quietly replaced them both. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
