I am 63, and the thing that finally wore me down was not the clothes. It was the standing in front of them. A lunch, a christening, my nephew's graduation — and forty minutes of holding one thing against another, none of it quite matching, before I gave up and wore the same navy I always wear.

We cut the top loose and long enough to be left out, because tucking is the part most women tell us they have quietly stopped doing. It falls softly over the waistband instead of sitting on it, so there is no line across the middle and nothing to keep pulling straight through the afternoon.

5Three tones that were chosen together

6You will wear the three of them apart
