A Letter From a Reader

The light layer I reach for all fall — not a coat, not just a tee.

On the linen blouses that skim instead of clinging, cover the arms, and have real pockets — the layer for the in-between days, in twenty-five colors. Why a small South Carolina family made them this way, and why they're clearing them now.

One of them — the layer for the mornings that cannot make up their mind.

I am 63 years old, and fall is the season my closet has never had an answer for. The mornings are cool, the afternoons are warm, and I spend the whole day either shivering in a tee or carrying a coat I do not need. Nothing in the middle ever seemed to exist.

So I would layer a heavy cardigan and peel it off by noon, and feel frumpy doing it. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up in a light linen blouse, thrown open over a simple top, looking cool and put-together at once. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. They call these the Fall Blouses, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A cut that skims, never clings

The blouse worn open in two soft panels, draping loosely

We cut these relaxed and easy, and worn open they fall in two soft panels down the front, so they skim your sides instead of gripping them. Light and airy, forgiving through the middle, and never clinging anywhere.

★★★★★"Loose and easy, and it skims right over the part of me I would rather not show. Light as anything."Diane M., Greenville SC

2Sleeves that cover the arms, or roll up

The linen sleeve rolled to three-quarter length

We gave every one full-length sleeves that cover the arms, and roll up neatly to the elbow on a warmer afternoon. Covered when you want it, cool when you do not — your choice, not the blouse's.

★★★★★"Sleeves I can wear down to cover my arms or roll up when it warms. Exactly the choice I wanted."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3Deep pockets your hands settle into

A hand settled into the deep side pocket

We set deep pockets into the sides, the roomy kind your hands settle into and that hold a phone and keys without spoiling the line. Not the shallow slits that fit nothing at all.

★★★★★"Deep pockets my hands actually fit inside. On a light blouse like this, that is a small miracle."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Warmer than a tee, lighter than a coat

We made these to be the layer fall never had — thrown open over whatever you already have on, warm enough for a cool morning and light enough for the afternoon that follows. The one thing you reach for when the day cannot make up its mind.

★★★★★"Warmer than a tee, lighter than a coat. It is the only thing I reach for in September now."Carol R., Charleston SC

5Twenty-five colors and prints

Angled flat lay of several blouses in different colors on linen

We made twenty-five of them, in soft solids from sky blue to olive to wine, and a few painterly prints besides — so there is one for every top in your closet. Whichever you choose, it looks like linen you spent real money on.

★★★★★"A woman asked me where I got it the first day I wore it. At 63, I had forgotten what that felt like."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make these across the full range of sizes, which varies a little from design to design, and cut them relaxed on purpose. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the blouse.

★★★★★"I usually dread ordering online at my size. It fit like it was made for me."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing them now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced these at $199.95 when they launched, and they sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than a third of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But fall had me shivering in a tee or lost in a coat for years, with nothing sensible in between — and these filled the gap the whole season had. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before they clear.
