A letter from a reader Harlowe S
The blouse that makes people ask where you got it.
On the Harlowe — the vintage-stripe button blouse that drapes instead of clings, buttons on easily, and covers the arms all the way to the wrist.
I am 63 years old, and I had quietly talked myself out of color. Everything cheerful felt like it was trying too hard — or it clung in the wrong places — so I kept reaching for the same plain navy top, morning after morning, feeling like I was dressing to disappear.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1A stripe that gets noticed — and remembered.

We designed the Harlowe around a vintage painterly stripe — blue, teal, red, orange, yellow, gold, pink and purple running top to bottom in a chalky, textured wash, like something you'd find on a bolt of cloth in an old South Carolina dry-goods store. Bold enough to draw a second look; muted enough that it goes with everything in your closet.
2It buttons on. No pulling it over your head.
We put buttons down the full front placket of the Harlowe because getting dressed should not be a struggle. You lay it open, slip it on, button up — done. The buttons are round and smooth, easy to fasten even on a rushed morning. No wrestling a neckline over your hair, no tugging a hem back into place. It is also easy to layer under a cardigan or open over a tee without fighting the fabric.
3A collar that opens your face, not your chest.

We cut the Harlowe with a classic point collar — the kind that lies flat and frames the face without pressing against the throat. The top button sits low enough to leave a little room at the neck, so you can wear a simple necklace or leave it open without feeling exposed. No choking, no gap — just a clean, flattering line right under your chin.
4Long sleeves that cover all the way to the wrist.

The sleeves come all the way down to a neat button cuff — not stopping at the elbow, not stopping at the widest part of the upper arm, but all the way to the wrist. The fabric is cut with enough room in the arm that nothing strains or pulls when you move. Covered from shoulder to cuff, and cool enough to wear indoors.
5It drapes. It does not cling.

We gave the Harlowe a relaxed, open weave and a cut that falls away gently from the bust — so it drapes across the middle instead of gripping it. It stays that way when you reach up for a shelf or lift a bag. The hem is cut long enough in front that it does not ride up, and it stays level all the way around.
6The same blouse after ten washes.
We wove the Harlowe with a firm, close construction so the neckband keeps its shape, the hem does not twist, and the length does not shrink after the first few trips through the machine. The stripe stays vivid. This is not a blouse she replaces next season — it is one she still reaches for in March.

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Harlowe at $113.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every top is going out at well below half of what it was.
I ordered mine that same evening. It arrived a few days later in a neat kraft-paper parcel with a little card from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else I own since the day it arrived.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many mornings reaching for the same plain top because nothing colorful felt right on me anymore — either it clung, or the sleeves stopped where I didn't want them to, or it looked tired after three washes. The Harlowe fixed all of that at once, quietly and without fuss. If any of that sounds familiar, I hope you find your size before it clears.
