I am 63, and my closet had solved itself into a problem. Everything in it was plain and everything in it went with everything else, which sounds sensible until you realize you have not felt like you were wearing anything in particular for about four years. Black top, black pants, and out the door.

Put the Isla over a plain black top and plain black pants and you are dressed. That is the entire proposition. You are not building an outfit around it or buying things to go with it — you are taking the quiet clothes you already own and giving them something to sit under. 3Open at the front, and that is what keeps it wearable

Nothing fastens. The two front edges hang straight down either side of you, and with a dark color underneath they draw two long vertical lines through all that pattern. That is what stops a busy piece from overwhelming — the print sits at the sides and the middle of you stays quiet. It is also the reason it works on every size we make it in.

4Light enough for indoors, and for August

We cut the Isla from a light woven cloth rather than a knit, so it is a layer for the look of it rather than the warmth. It goes on indoors without heating you up, it works over short sleeves in high summer, and it packs down to nothing in a case. A statement piece you can only wear in October is not much of a statement piece.

5Long enough to cover, and it moves

It falls well past the hip, so it covers the seat and the tops of the legs the way a short cardigan never does. And because the cloth is light, it lifts and moves when you walk rather than hanging still. Covered where you want covering, and the piece is doing something rather than just sitting on you.

6Five colorways, and a size for you — S to 5XL

The Isla comes in five colorways, each one a different family of prints held together — the one you see me wearing is the blue and green. Sizes run S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL. Because it hangs open rather than fastening, the fit is forgiving at every one of them, so take your usual size.
