A letter from a reader Jacqueline Sweatshirt
The sweatshirt that makes people stop and ask.
On the Jacqueline — a soft, relaxed colorblock top that covers the arms to the wrist, goes with the jeans already in your closet, and turns heads every single time.
I am 63 years old, and getting dressed had quietly become something I dreaded. Everything soft enough to want to wear looked like I had given up; everything with any personality felt too young, or too loud, or just not quite me. So I kept reaching for the same plain navy pullover and telling myself it was fine.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1A colorblock print that actually gets noticed — for the right reasons.

We designed the Jacqueline around a bold, oversized pink-and-denim-blue checkerboard — not a pattern you have to squint to see, but one that reads as deliberate and artistic from across the room. It is cheerful without being loud, and it has a way of making a plain pair of jeans feel like an outfit worth noticing.
2Soft enough to forget you have it on.
We chose a fabric that is genuinely soft — the kind that does not scratch at the neck or rub at the inner arms after an hour. At our age, skin gets more sensitive than it used to be, and a top that irritates is a top that stays in the drawer. The Jacqueline is the one you reach for on a Tuesday morning without even thinking about it.
3A detail that does real work — the diagonal button placket.

We ran a diagonal line of wooden buttons across the lower front — not for function, but for character. It breaks the checkerboard at an angle, gives the eye somewhere to travel, and lifts the whole thing above a plain sweatshirt without trying too hard. Small details like this are why people ask.
4Rolled cuffs that cover the wrist — and still look polished.

We finished each sleeve with a rolled denim-look cuff that sits right at the wrist — covered from shoulder to wrist, with no bunching or riding up. The cuff is roomy enough to slip on without wrestling and stays put through a whole day of errands. Covered and comfortable, with no cardigan needed on top.
5Goes with everything already in your closet.

We picked a pink and denim-blue colorblock because denim blue goes with almost everything a woman already owns — white jeans, dark jeans, black trousers, a simple khaki skirt. You do not need to buy a new bottom to wear it. It is the piece that makes what you already have look more considered.
6It fits the body you actually have.
We cut the Jacqueline relaxed on purpose, from XS through 4XL — meant to fit the woman, not make the woman fit the sweatshirt. It falls away from the body instead of clinging, which means it is comfortable at every size and flattering in the way that ease always is.
The Jacqueline, against the sweatshirts you've been buying.

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Jacqueline at $145.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every sweatshirt is going out at well below half of what it was.
I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel, folded neatly in tissue, with a short note from the family tucked on top. I have reached for it more than anything else I own since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had spent too many mornings reaching for that same plain navy pullover, telling myself it was fine — and one sweatshirt quietly put a stop to that. If you have been feeling a little invisible in your own clothes, I hope you find your size before it clears.
