A Letter From a Reader

The one cozy sweater I reach for on every cold, do-nothing day.

On the thick cable-knit that actually keeps you warm, the relaxed cut that skims instead of clinging, the sleeves that cover the arms, and the length you can wear over leggings. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.

The Joelle cable-knit tunic sweater in black
The Joelle — the cozy sweater that made getting dressed on a cold day easy again.

I am 63 years old, and by the time the cold weather really settled in, I had all but given up on looking nice on the days I wanted to be comfortable. My warmest sweaters were thin, scratchy things that clung in all the wrong places, or shapeless sacks I only wore around the house. Cozy and put-together never seemed to come in the same sweater.

What I wanted was simple. One thick, genuinely warm sweater — long enough to wear over my leggings, relaxed enough to skim over my middle instead of gripping it, with sleeves that covered my arms. Something I could pull on with boots and feel both cozy and pulled-together, without a second thought.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant wore the coziest chunky knit one chilly Sunday — long, soft, and so warm-looking. I asked her about it. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The sweater is called the Joelle, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A thick, cozy cable-knit

Angled flat lay of the cable-knit sweater in black, cream and burgundy on linen

We built the Joelle from a thick, chunky cable-knit — deep twisted cables and real weight to it, the kind that actually keeps the cold out and feels wonderful to sink into. Not a thin, scratchy knit that looks warm and isn't. This one wraps you up.

★★★★★"So thick and cozy. The cable knit is gorgeous up close and it is genuinely warm — not one of those thin sweaters that pretend."Carol R., Charleston SC

2A relaxed cut that skims

The cable-knit sweater draping loosely over the body

We cut it relaxed and a touch oversized, so the knit drapes and skims over your middle instead of gripping it. All the comfort of your coziest sweater, with a shape that still looks easy and put-together.

★★★★★"It skims right over my middle and is so comfortable. Cozy but not a shapeless sack — I feel put-together in it."Diane M., Greenville SC

3Sleeves that cover the arms

The full-length cable-knit sleeve with a ribbed cuff

We gave it a full-length sleeve with room all around, down to a thick ribbed cuff at the wrist. Your arms stay covered and warm, with nothing gripping them — covered comfort right to the wrist.

★★★★★"The sleeves cover my arms properly and the ribbed cuffs keep the drafts out. Warm, covered, and so comfortable."Linda K., Beaufort SC

4Long enough to wear over leggings

The chunky cable-knit texture, close up

We made the Joelle long — a proper tunic length that covers you nicely and looks just right worn over leggings with boots. One easy piece that turns into a whole outfit the moment you pull it on.

★★★★★"The length is perfect over leggings, and it covers everything I want covered. I pull it on with boots and I'm ready to go."Janet S., Bluffton SC

5Five colors, one cozy shape

We make the Joelle in five colors — a classic black, soft cream, warm beige, deep green and rich burgundy — all in the same cozy cable-knit shape. Easy to wear, easy to match, in whichever color feels like you.

★★★★★"I bought the black and went back for the cream. Such an easy, cozy shape — I reach for one or the other all winter."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Joelle from a size S to XL and cut it with a relaxed, easy body. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the sweater.

★★★★★"It fit beautifully with room to move, and it skims all the right places. So warm and cozy — my new favorite."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Joelle at $139.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it on every cold, do-nothing day since.

I do not usually write things like this. But cozy and put-together had stopped coming in the same sweater for me, and this one thick, warm knit handed both back. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
