We cut the body with enough room across the chest that the edges do not curl away or flare open, and the front never drags the eye to the middle the way a cardigan that swings wide will. It does not matter which design you choose — the cut underneath is the same on all thirty-seven. Once you know your size, you choose on color alone.

The Clarke family present thirty-seven designs in this collection — every color from soft blush pink and heathered grey to forest green, teal, charcoal, lavender and warm taupe. The patterns change across each one: Nordic snowflakes, floral diamonds, botanical motifs, geometric bands. But the cut underneath is identical on all of them. So once you have found your size, every other decision is about the color or the pattern that feels most like you. That is rather a pleasant problem to have.

6Soft where it touches you.

Why they're clearing them now

They priced the Clarke Cozy Vintage Cardigans at $157.00 when the collection launched, and they sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every cardigan across all thirty-seven designs is going out at from $69.95 — less than half the original price.

Each one arrives in an open kraft box with the cardigan folded in cream tissue and a small printed card from the family resting on top — the kind of unboxing that makes you feel someone thought about it, which I suppose they did.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many mornings reaching for a cardigan and ending up a little deflated by lunchtime — the front hanging crooked, the fabric scratching, the whole thing looking tired before the day had really started.
