A Letter From a Reader

The one soft thing in my closet that does not look like something I sleep in

A pink and cream plaid in soft waffle knit — comfortable as an old shirt, tidy enough to answer the door in.

The Emilie. It has quietly become the thing I put on first.

I am 63, and my mornings had settled into a small daily defeat. There was the comfortable pile — the fleece, the old sweatshirt, the things I could actually move in — and the presentable pile, which pulled at the middle and itched at the neck. I lived out of the comfortable pile and changed if anyone was coming over.

I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who pointed out that I owned nothing that was both. Then she sent me a link one evening with three words: just read it.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The sweater is called the Emilie, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A relaxed cut that skims, never clings

The relaxed fit of the Emilie sweater

We cut the Emilie easy through the body. The shoulder drops, the sleeve is roomy at the top, and the body falls straight past the middle instead of gripping it. It is the comfort of a shirt you have owned for ten years, in something you have not had to apologize for at the door.

★★★★★"It is the first thing I own that is as comfortable as my old sweatshirt and does not look like one."Diane M., Greenville SC

2Warm, but light enough to keep on indoors

The Emilie is a light sweater on purpose. It holds warmth the way a good thermal does, without the weight of a winter knit, so you can put it on at seven in the morning and still be comfortable at the kitchen table at noon. Nothing to peel off, nothing to change out of halfway through the day.

★★★★★"Warm on the porch and still comfortable at lunch. I did not know that was possible in one sweater."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3The waffle knit does the work

Close view of the waffle knit texture of the Emilie

We make the Emilie in a soft waffle knit — a little raised, a little textured, the way a good thermal feels against you. It gives with you when you move instead of pulling, it holds its shape through the day, and there is none of the scratch women our age have learned to expect from anything warm.

★★★★★"Soft enough to wear against bare skin, which at my age is the first thing I check."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4A plaid that softens instead of shouting

Close view of the pink and cream plaid and the buttoned placket

We drew the Emilie as a wide plaid in dusty pink and cream, with a thin gray line running through it, because a soft check does something a plain color cannot — it puts warmth back near your face without brightening you like a spotlight. Three small buttons at the neck finish it like a good shirt.

★★★★★"The pink is soft, not girlish. It does something kind to my face, which I did not expect from a sweater."Carol R., Charleston SC

5One of fifty-four, all at one price

The Emilie sweater worn outdoors on a cool morning

The Emilie sits in a collection of fifty-four designs, and they all cost the same — so choosing is about which one you like rather than which one you can justify. This plaid if you want quiet, flowers or stripes if you want to be looked at. Most women pick one, wear it for a week, and quietly come back for a second.

★★★★★"I ordered the plaid first. Two weeks later I ordered two more. My husband says he can find me in a crowd now."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Emilie from a size XS all the way to 4XL, and every size is cut on the same relaxed lines — the larger ones are not simply stretched out, and the plaid is scaled so the check stays in proportion on every size. Order the size you usually wear; it is meant to sit easy on you.

★★★★★"A 4XL that is actually cut for a 4XL body, with the check still in proportion. I nearly wrote to thank them."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Emilie at $185.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every sweater in the collection is going out at less than a third of that.

Mine came in a kraft box on a Tuesday, folded in white tissue. I put it on in the bedroom and wore it out to the mailbox in the same hour.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years choosing between comfortable and presentable — and this one sweater quietly ended that argument in my closet. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
