A Letter From a Reader

As light as a cardigan, as warm as a winter coat

Soft plush in a warm apricot, a collar that stands up against the wind, and room to move through the arms.

The Lila in Apricot. On the hook by the door, and on me most of the day.

I am 63, and the thing that finally gets you is not the cold. It is the weight. My winter coat is warm and by the time I have carried it round the grocery store I want it off my shoulders more than I want to be warm. So I started leaving it in the car and going out underdressed instead, which is how a woman my age ends up with a cough in November.

I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who said I was choosing between warm and comfortable when I should not have to. Then she sent me a link one evening with three words: just read it.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The cardigan is called the Lila, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A high collar that stands up to the wind

The high stand collar of the Lila cardigan

The collar is cut tall and plush, and it stands up on its own instead of flopping open. Zipped to the top it covers the back of your neck and reaches under your chin, which is exactly where a cold wind gets in. Left open it folds back into a soft lapel and frames the neckline instead of gaping.

★★★★★"The wind off the water used to go straight down my collar. Zipped up in this, it does not reach me."Diane M., Greenville SC

2Soft the whole way through

The plush is brushed on both sides, so the inside is as soft as the outside — nothing scratchy at the neck, nothing rough at the wrist, no lining that slides around. It is the kind of soft you notice with your hand before you have even put it on, and the kind you stop noticing once it is on, which is better.

★★★★★"Soft on the inside as well as the outside. I wear it over a short-sleeved top and it does not bother me at all."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3Wide and easy through the arms

The roomy sleeve of the Lila cardigan

We cut the sleeves generously the whole way down, with a dropped shoulder, so nothing grips the upper arm and there is room for a sweater underneath without the fabric pulling anywhere. You can reach up to a top shelf or into the back seat of the car and the whole thing moves with you.

★★★★★"Room for a sweater underneath and nothing tight on my arms. I can actually reach up in it."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Coat warmth, and almost no weight

Close view of the plush texture of the Lila

This is the part women write to us about. The plush traps warm air in its ridges the way a blanket does, so it holds heat like a proper coat while weighing next to nothing on your shoulders. Nothing pressing down, nothing to shrug off at the door — you simply stop thinking about it.

★★★★★"As warm as my parka and it weighs nothing. I forget I have it on until I come indoors."Carol R., Charleston SC

5A zip, so it goes on and comes off easily

The zip front of the Lila cardigan

The zip runs the whole way up, so you step into it, pull it closed and you are dressed — nothing over your head, nothing to fasten one button at a time with cold fingers. Zipped to the chin on the walk, open at the table, and it hangs straight and tidy either way.

★★★★★"One pull and it is on. With my hands the way they are in the mornings, that matters more than it should."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Lila from a size S all the way to 5XL, and every size is cut on the same easy lines — the larger ones are not simply stretched out. It falls straight to the hip and skims rather than grips, so it sits well whether you wear it open over a top or zipped over a sweater. Order the size you usually wear.

★★★★★"A 4XL that is actually cut for a 4XL body. I ordered my normal size and it fit the way the picture looked."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Lila at $209.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than a third of that.

Mine came in a kraft box on a Tuesday, folded in white tissue. I zipped it up in the bedroom and wore it out to the mailbox in the same hour.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had started leaving my coat in the car and going out underdressed because carrying it was worse than being cold — and this one ended that little bargain. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
