I am 63 years old, and I had quietly decided that my clothes ought to be serious. Sensible colors, sensible shapes, nothing that drew a smile or a second look. Somewhere I got the idea that a little whimsy was for children, and that I had aged out of it.

But a serious sweater does nothing to lift a gray morning, and I missed the small pleasure of wearing something that made me happy just to look down at. The trouble was that the cheerful things were thin and cheap, and the good things were dull.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant came in wearing a whole flock of little sheep across her sweater, grinning as everyone stopped to look, and I could not remember the last time a sweater had made a room smile. She told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.
