I am 63, and somewhere along the way I stopped buying dresses. Not because I stopped liking them. Because of the length, every single time.

They come two ways. Short enough that I am pulling at it whenever I sit down, or long enough that it swallows me and I look like I am on my way to something solemn. There is a narrow band in between where a dress works on me, and almost nothing is cut to land in it.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who told me to stop scrolling past dresses and look at one from a small family boutique here in South Carolina. Before I tell you what it did, I think you should read the Clarke family's letter first.

1The hem is short at the front and long at the back

We stopped choosing one length. The front sits just above the knee so you are not wading through fabric, and the hem sweeps down at the back and sides to well below the calf. You get cover exactly where women tell us they want it — the back, the seat, the backs of the legs — and a light, short front that shows a boot. One dress, both answers.

2It buttons all the way down

Small white buttons run from the collar to the hem, so it goes on like a shirt. Nothing pulled over the head, nothing lifted over the shoulders, and no zip behind you that somebody else has to reach. It also means you can leave it open over jeans and wear it as a long layer instead, which is not what we designed it for and is what half our customers do with it.

3The lace sits where the eye already goes

There are two lace panels on the bodice, one on each side of the buttons, and nothing anywhere else. Decoration scattered over a whole dress pulls the eye down and across you. Kept at the chest, it does the opposite — it draws attention up toward the collar and the face, and leaves the rest of the dress plain and quiet.

4A full sleeve, gathered into a ruffle

The sleeve is long and full to the wrist, where it gathers into a small ruffled cuff. The upper arm is covered without the sleeve hanging like a bell or catching on everything you pass. The ruffle is what stops a plain white cotton dress reading as plain white cotton — it is a small piece of prettiness at the one place you actually see your own sleeve.

5Nothing sits on the waist

Below the lace panels the fabric is gathered and released, so the whole skirt falls away from the body from just under the bust down. There is no waistband, no belt and no seam drawing a line across the middle of you. It is a lightweight cotton, which means it moves rather than hangs, and you can eat a proper lunch in it without planning ahead.

6One white, and a size for you — XS to 3XL

The Lucia is made in one color only, and it is white — a plain, soft white with no pattern to date it and nothing to clash with the boots or the jewelry you already own. Sizes run XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL. It is cut generously through the body, so if you are between sizes take the smaller one.

Why they're clearing it now
