A Letter From a Reader

The sweater that finally let me stop wearing my husband's old fleece

A soft ribbed knit with a cowl you can pull up to your chin — warm, easy, and cut loose enough to sit down in without a second thought.

The Luna in Gray — comfortable enough to live in, tidy enough to answer the door in.

I am 63, and by October my closet had split into two piles. There were the nice sweaters I saved for company, which itched and pulled in all the wrong places, and there was my husband's old fleece, which I actually wore. Every single day. Warm, shapeless, and not something I ever wanted to be caught in at the mailbox.

I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who told me there was a third option and that I should read about it before buying anything else. She sent me a link one evening with three words: just read it.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The sweater is called the Luna, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A relaxed cut that skims, never clings

The relaxed, oversized fit of the Luna sweater

We cut the Luna easy through the body. The shoulder drops, the sleeve is roomy at the top, and the body falls straight past the middle instead of gripping it. You can sit down after lunch, cross your arms, reach into the back of a cupboard — and it settles back the way it was.

★★★★★"It is the first nice sweater I have owned that I am not relieved to take off at the end of the day."Diane M., Greenville SC

2The rib does the work

We knit the Luna in a fine, even rib from the neck all the way down. The rib gives it quiet structure, so it drapes instead of hanging flat, and it gives with you when you move rather than pulling across the back. It is soft against the skin, with none of the scratch women expect from a warm sweater.

★★★★★"Soft enough to wear against bare skin, which at my age is the first thing I check."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3A cowl you can pull up to your chin

The tall ribbed cowl neck of the Luna sweater

The neck is knit tall and left loose, so it stands soft around the throat instead of gripping it. Pull it up on a cold morning and it covers the back of your neck; fold it down and it sits like a wide collar. Nobody who dislikes a tight turtleneck has to think twice about this one.

★★★★★"I cannot stand anything close around my throat. This one I can wear all day, and I do."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Little buttons at the cuff

The buttoned cuff of the Luna sweater

We finished each sleeve with a narrow ribbed cuff and a row of small buttons. It is a detail from a good shirt rather than a knit, and it is the reason the Luna does not read as loungewear. The sleeve gathers gently above it, so your wrists stay covered without any bunching.

★★★★★"Those little buttons are the whole difference. It looks like something, instead of looking like a sweatshirt."Carol R., Charleston SC

5Warm, but never heavy

The Luna sweater worn outdoors on a cool morning

We wanted warmth you can keep on indoors. The Luna holds the heat around the neck and the shoulders where you feel the cold first, but it stays light through the body — so it works on the porch at seven and at the kitchen table at eleven, without the weight of a coat or a second layer.

★★★★★"Warm on the porch, still comfortable an hour later inside. I have not taken it off since it came."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Luna from a size S all the way to 5XL, and every size is cut on the same relaxed lines — the larger sizes are not simply stretched out. It comes in four colors, including the Gray you see here, so you can pick the one that sits easily with what you already wear.

★★★★★"A 4XL that is actually cut for a 4XL body. I nearly wrote to thank them, and now I am writing this instead."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Luna at $189.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every sweater is going out at less than a third of that.

Mine came in a kraft box on a Tuesday, folded in white tissue. The fleece has been on its hook ever since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years feeling plain and a little invisible in my own clothes — and this one sweater quietly gave me back the pleasure of getting dressed on a cold morning. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
