A letter from a reader Nancy Cardigan
The cardigan that stopped three women in their tracks.
On the Nancy — a bold Nordic Fair Isle pattern, a hood that keeps the chill off your neck, and a button front that means you're never too warm and stuck.
I am 63 years old, and I had quietly stopped reaching for anything that made me feel noticed. My closet had drifted — slowly, without my quite realizing it — into a rotation of safe, neutral layers that kept me covered but left me feeling like I had faded into the background of my own life.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1A print that gets people talking — for the right reasons.

We designed the Nancy around a traditional Nordic Fair Isle pattern — bands of rust, yellow, forest green, white and dark red arranged in chevron waves and geometric snowflakes across the body and sleeves. It is a print with real warmth and character to it, the kind that photographs how it actually looks and that women stop you to ask about. Nothing garish, nothing costume-like — just a cheerful, considered piece of color on an autumn morning.
2Nothing about it says cardigan in the old sense.
We hear it often: women want the warmth and the easy button front, but not the image that comes with the word "cardigan." The Nancy is built on a traditional Nordic knit pattern that reads as deliberate and put-together — the kind of piece you choose, not the kind you settle for. The hood, the wooden buttons, the bold stripe of color: none of it is an afterthought.
3Deep ribbed cuffs that spring back.

We gave the Nancy a deep, wide ribbed cuff in solid orange red — the kind that fits snugly at the wrist without binding, tucks neatly under a coat sleeve, and springs back to shape after a full day's wear. It is a small detail that tells you a lot about how the rest of the cardigan is put together.
4A button front that means you are never stuck.

We set dark brown buttons down the center front so that the moment a room gets too warm, you can slip the Nancy off your shoulders in five seconds flat — conversation uninterrupted, hair untouched — and back on just as fast when the draft comes back. No pulling over the head, no raised arms, no shoulder protest. It is a design decision, not a convenience feature.
5A hood that keeps the chill off your neck.

We added a soft hood with a drawstring so that when the draft comes through the door, or the October morning turns sharper than the forecast promised, you have something to pull up without reaching for a scarf. It sits quietly against the shoulders when you don't need it and does its job the moment you do.
6Pockets that hold something and still lie flat.
We cut two front patch pockets into the Nancy and reinforced them to lie flat against the body — so your phone, your glasses, a little tin of mints can go in without the pocket sagging and adding bulk at the hip. They are deep enough to be useful and tidy enough to forget about.
The Nancy, against the cardigans you've been buying.

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Nancy at $155.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every cardigan is going out at well below half of what it was.
I ordered mine the evening my church friend showed me the page. It arrived a few days later, folded neatly in cream tissue inside a kraft-paper parcel, with a short note from the family tucked on top. I have not taken it off a Monday morning since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years reaching past the things that made me feel seen, and choosing the safe, quiet option instead. This cardigan — the print, the hood, the way it buttons on and off without a fight — quietly gave me back the small pleasure of being noticed. If any of that sounds familiar, I hope you find your size before it clears.
