I am 63, and for about fifteen years I dressed to not be looked at. Navy, black, gray. Nothing with a pattern on it, because a pattern gets noticed and I had somewhere along the line decided that being noticed at my age was a risk rather than a pleasure.

It works, in the sense that nobody ever says anything. It also means that opening my closet in the morning had become one of the duller five minutes of my day.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who told me to stop hiding and look at something from a small family boutique here in South Carolina. Before I tell you what it did, I think you should read the Clarke family's letter first.

1It is patchwork, not a print

It reads like something collected over years rather than made in one pass.

The whole palette is earth — olive, rust, gold and cream, with the linework in black. Nothing bright, nothing that sits forward off the fabric. That is the difference between a piece that is interesting and a piece that is loud: the pattern gives you something to look at, and the colors keep it settled. 3The sleeve has a second print inside it

Roll the sleeve back and a different fabric shows on the inside of the cuff — another print entirely, chosen to sit against the outside rather than match it. 4Pants that are full, then closed at the ankle

The linen pants are cut generously the whole way down the leg, then gathered in at the ankle. Full where you want the room and closed where wide pants usually go wrong — no fabric dragging on the ground, no hem catching under a sandal. You get the ease of a loose pant without the length problem attached to it.

5Both halves arrive together

This is the part people write to us about. A patterned shirt on its own is a problem to solve — you own it and then you never quite work out what goes with it.
