A Letter From a Reader

The cozy plaid cardigan I live in all fall — and there's a color for every day.

On the soft brushed-knit plaid cardigans that throw over anything, cover the arms, and skim instead of clinging — warm, easy, and endlessly wearable. Why a small South Carolina family made them this way, and why they're clearing them now.

The gray-and-rust plaid knit cardigan over a white tee and white pants
The one soft layer that makes jeans and a tee look like an outfit.

I am 63 years old, and come the first cool days of fall, I reach for the same thing every morning: something soft to throw over my tee that will keep the chill off. The trouble is what I had to reach for. My old cardigans had gone bobbly and shapeless, the fleeces made me look like I was off to do the gardening, and a stiff jacket was far too much for a walk or a coffee. I wanted cozy, and I wanted to look like I had made a little effort. I rarely got both.

What I wanted was one soft, warm layer with a bit of character — something I could throw over the jeans and tee I already wear, that covered my arms, skimmed over my middle, and looked pulled-together rather than dowdy. Cozy, but not sloppy.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant walked in wearing the softest plaid cardigan over a plain white tee, looking cozy and pulled-together at once. I finally asked her about it. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The collection is called the Plaid Cardigans, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1It makes the whole outfit cozy and pulled-together

A purple plaid cardigan worn open over a white tee and white pants

We made these to do the work for you. Throw one open over the jeans or white pants and tee you already wear, and you look instantly cozy and pulled-together — warm, easy, and like you actually planned an outfit. One soft layer, and the whole look comes together.

★★★★★"I throw it over my tee and jeans and suddenly look put-together. So cozy, and it does all the work for me."Diane M., Greenville SC

2A soft, warm sleeve that covers the arm

The soft brushed-knit sleeve with a ribbed cuff

We knit them from a soft, brushed yarn and gave them a full sleeve that covers the arm down to a snug ribbed cuff. The tops of the arms stay covered and warm — the part so many of us like covered — wrapped in something as soft as your favorite blanket.

★★★★★"So soft and warm, and the sleeves cover my arms properly. It feels like wearing a cozy blanket, but I look nice."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3Wear it open, or buttoned to the collar

The knit shirt collar and buttons, close up

We finished them with a soft knit shirt collar and a row of buttons, so you can throw it open over a tee, button it up against a cold wind, or leave the collar up on a gray day. One cozy cardigan, and a handful of ways to wear it.

★★★★★"I wear it open indoors and buttoned up on chilly walks. The collar keeps the wind off. So easy and so warm."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Seventeen plaids, a color for every mood

Angled flat lay of several plaid cardigans in different colors on a natural linen background

We made a whole range — a soft green, a classic red, a warm rust, a gentle purple, a bright blue and more — so there is one to go with everything you own, and one for whatever mood you are in. Seventeen cozy plaids to choose from, each as soft as the last.

★★★★★"I bought the rust, then the green a week later. They go with everything and I reach for one almost every day in fall."Carol R., Charleston SC

5A relaxed cut that skims

We cut them relaxed and a touch oversized, with a gently curved hem, so they drape softly and skim over the middle instead of gripping it, and sit kindly over the hips. All the ease of your comfiest knit, cut to actually flatter.

★★★★★"It skims right over my middle and the longer hem covers my hips. Cozy and flattering at the same time — a rare thing."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make these in a full range of sizes and cut them relaxed and easy to layer over a tee or a fine knit. They are meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the cardigan.

★★★★★"I usually dread ordering online at my size. It fit beautifully and layered perfectly over my tee. So comfortable."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing them now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced these cardigans at $169.95 when they launched, and they sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But every fall I had to choose between cozy and looking nice — and one soft plaid cardigan ended that for good. Now I have three, and I reach for one every cool morning. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your colors before they clear.
