A Letter From a Reader

I now keep this cardigan by the door and reach for it a dozen times a day

Soft, light warmth you can throw over anything — relaxed enough to leave open, long enough to cover what you would rather not think about.

The Sabrina in Khaki Brown — the one that now lives on the hook by the door.

I am 63, and for years my cardigans have been a compromise. The warm ones sat on me like a bathrobe and pulled across the back every time I reached for a cabinet. The pretty ones were so thin they did nothing at all, and the sleeves always stopped short of my wrists. I kept buying them anyway, every fall, and kept being disappointed by Thanksgiving.

I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who told me to stop and read something first. She sent me a link one evening with three words: just read it.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The cardigan is called the Sabrina, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1A relaxed drape that skims, never clings

The relaxed, oversized drape of the Sabrina cardigan

We cut the Sabrina loose on purpose. The shoulder drops, the body hangs straight instead of gripping the middle, and nothing pulls across the back when you reach up for a cabinet. Worn open it falls in two soft lines down the front, which is the quickest way we know to look put together without trying.

★★★★★"I put it on over a plain white tee and suddenly looked like I had made an effort. I had not."Diane M., Greenville SC

2Warmth without the weight

We knit the Sabrina in a soft, brushed yarn that holds warmth without the bulk of a coat. It sits light on the shoulders, so you can wear it through a cool morning at home and keep it on right through lunch without ever feeling padded, wrapped up or too warm indoors.

★★★★★"It is the only thing I own that is warm enough for the porch and light enough to keep on at the table."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3Long sleeves that cover your arms

The long sleeve of the Sabrina cardigan over the wrist

We made the sleeves full length, long enough to sit over the wrist with a little slouch. Push them up while you cook and they stay where you put them; let them down and your arms are covered again. There is no cold gap between the cuff and the back of your hand.

★★★★★"I have stopped choosing my clothes around covering my arms. That freedom is worth more than what I paid."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Buttons, if you want them

The small button front of the Sabrina cardigan

We finished the front with a row of small buttons. Most women wear the Sabrina open, and it is cut to hang beautifully that way. But when the wind turns on the porch you can do up two or three, and it closes soft against you instead of pulling tight across the front.

★★★★★"Open at the store, buttoned on the walk home. I did not expect that to matter as much as it does."Carol R., Charleston SC

5Long enough to cover what you want covered

The Sabrina cardigan worn open, falling past the hip

We run the Sabrina well past the hip. It covers the waistband, the back of your jeans and everything you would rather not think about when you stand up from a chair. Long enough to work as a proper layer, short enough that it never starts to read like a robe.

★★★★★"It covers me exactly where I want covering. I ordered a second one in the gray a week later."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Sabrina from a size S all the way to 3XL, and every size is cut on the same relaxed lines — the larger sizes are not simply stretched out. It comes in six quiet colors, including the Khaki Brown you see here, the kind of shades that sit easily with the rest of your closet.

★★★★★"I ordered my usual size and it fit the way the picture looked, which almost never happens to me anymore."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Sabrina at $239.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every cardigan is going out at well under a third of that.

Mine came in a kraft box on a Tuesday, folded in white tissue. I had it on before I had finished opening the rest of the mail.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years feeling plain and a little invisible in my own clothes — and this one cardigan quietly gave me back the pleasure of getting dressed in the morning. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
