A Letter From a Reader

Real leather on the outside, an orthopedic footbed on the inside

The first pair in years I could wear from the car to the church hall and back without thinking about my feet.

The Sabrina in Brown. Worn every day for three weeks, and they look better than when they came.

I am 63, and my feet had quietly started deciding where I went. Anything with a real sole was ugly. Anything that looked nice had a strip of cardboard for an insole and left me aching by the time I got back to the car. So I wore the same pair of soft flats until they were shapeless, and I said no to a good many afternoons out.

I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who said comfortable and decent-looking were not opposites and that I had simply stopped looking. Then she sent me a link one evening with three words: just read it.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The shoes are called the Sabrina, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1Real leather, not something coated to look like it

The genuine leather upper of the Sabrina Mary Janes

The upper is genuine leather, hand-finished so the color sits deeper in the creases and lighter over the toe. That is why it softens to the shape of your foot in a week instead of fighting you for a month, and why it will still look like something in three years. Coated fabric cracks. Leather takes on a life.

★★★★★"You can smell that they are real leather the moment you open the box. Mine have moulded to my feet already."Diane M., Greenville SC

2No breaking-in period to survive

We soften the leather before it ever reaches you, and we line the inside so there is nothing rubbing at the heel or across the top of the foot. Women write to tell us they wore them out of the box to a lunch and never once thought about their feet, which is the whole point and is not something we take lightly.

★★★★★"I wore them straight out of the box to a wedding. Not one blister, not one sore spot."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3An orthopedic footbed, built in

The cushioned orthopedic footbed inside the Sabrina

Inside is a proper orthopedic footbed: a contoured insole with real arch support and a cushioned heel, the kind you would otherwise buy separately and jam into a shoe that was never shaped for it. It holds the arch instead of letting it drop, and it takes the jolt out of a hard floor.

★★★★★"My arches ache in everything. Two hours on the tile at my daughter's and they did not once."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4A strap that actually holds your foot

The buckled strap of the Sabrina Mary Janes

The strap crosses the top of the foot and buckles to the width you need, so the shoe stays with you instead of slipping at the heel with every step. That is what stops you gripping with your toes, and gripping with your toes is what makes a day out tiring. Loosen it in the afternoon when feet swell a little.

★★★★★"No slipping at the heel, and I can let it out a notch by evening. Whoever thought of that understood feet."Carol R., Charleston SC

5A low, steady heel you can walk on all day

The low block heel and sole of the Sabrina

We put the Sabrina on a low block heel with a wide, grippy sole. It lifts you just enough to feel dressed and keeps both feet flat and steady on brick, gravel or a wet parking lot. No wobble, no tiptoeing, nothing that makes you watch the ground instead of the person you are talking to.

★★★★★"Steady on the brick sidewalks downtown, which is more than I can say for anything else I own."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the foot you have

We make the Sabrina from a size 5 to a size 12, half sizes included, in brown and in black. The toe is rounded and roomy rather than tapered, so there is space across the ball of the foot for those of us who are not a narrow size anymore. Order the size you usually wear.

★★★★★"Room across the front, at last. I ordered my normal size and they fit the way shoes used to fit."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Sabrina at $229.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every pair is going out at less than a third of that.

Mine came in a kraft box on a Tuesday, wrapped in white tissue. I had them on before I had finished opening the rest of the mail.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had started turning down afternoons out because of my feet — and one pair of shoes quietly gave those afternoons back. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
