A letter from a reader Saskia S
The soft velvet dress that feels like a robe and looks like an occasion.
On the cozy velvet midi that keeps the chill off your neck, covers the arms, and skims instead of clinging — with a lace-ruffle hem that makes it special. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.
I am 63 years old, and as the days turn cool I want two things from a dress that never seemed to come together: to be genuinely warm and cozy, and to look like I have made an effort. The cozy things were shapeless and dull. The elegant things were thin and chilly, cut for a heated ballroom, not a real autumn day. So I was warm and frumpy, or elegant and freezing.
What I wanted was one dress that felt like wrapping up in something soft — warm at the neck, covering my arms, skimming over the rest — yet looked considered and lovely enough to wear out. Cozy and elegant, in the one dress.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant wore the most beautiful soft olive velvet dress to an autumn supper, a high neck and a little lace at the hem, looking warm and elegant all at once. I finally asked her about it. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.
The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The dress is called the Saskia, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1Soft velvet, with a lace-ruffle hem

We made the Saskia in a soft, cozy velvet that feels wonderful against the skin and catches the light beautifully, and finished it with a delicate lace-and-ruffle hem peeking out below. Cozy to wear, elegant to look at, and quietly special — in a muted olive or a warm camel.
2A relaxed cut that skims

We cut it as a relaxed, slightly oversized column, so the soft velvet drapes and skims over the middle and hips instead of clinging. Forgiving exactly where you want it, and as easy and comfortable to wear as your favorite robe.
3Long sleeves that cover the arm

We gave it a long, softly billowing velvet sleeve that covers the arm to a buttoned cuff at the wrist. The tops of the arms stay covered and warm — the part so many of us like covered — with a graceful, gentle drape.
4A soft high neck that keeps you warm

We finished it with a tall, soft mock neck that wraps gently around the neck and keeps the chill off — the cozy warmth of a scarf, built right in. Soft against the skin, and one less thing to reach for on a cool day.
5Cozy enough for home, lovely enough to go out
We made it to cross that line you can never find — soft and easy enough to feel like loungewear, elegant enough for a supper or a gathering. Add boots and earrings, or wear it with slippers by the fire; it looks right either way.
6It fits the body you have
We make the Saskia from a size S all the way to 2XL and cut it with a relaxed, easy column. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the dress.

Why they're clearing it now

They priced the Saskia at $164.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.
I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But every autumn I chose between warm and frumpy or elegant and freezing — and this one soft velvet dress ended that, cozy as a robe and lovely enough to go out in. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
