A letter from a reader Seraphina
Comfortable enough for the sofa, smart enough for the street.
On the waffle-knit sweatshirt that skims instead of clinging, covers the arms, and looks far more put-together than a plain one — with a soft colorblock and a little henley placket. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.
I am 63 years old, and my most comfortable clothes have always been the ones I would never let anyone see me in. The soft, cozy sweatshirt lived at home, strictly for the sofa; the moment I had to leave the house, I changed into something stiffer and sadder and a good deal less comfortable.
It seemed a silly bargain to keep making — comfort in private, presentable in public, never the two together. What I wanted was a sweatshirt I was not embarrassed to be seen in, and I had begun to think it did not exist.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant turned up in what was plainly a sweatshirt, and looked lovely and pulled-together in it. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.
The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The sweatshirt is called the Seraphina, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1A cut that skims, never clings

We cut the Seraphina relaxed and easy through the body, so it skims your shape rather than gripping it. All the comfort of a sweatshirt, with a soft ribbed hem that gives it a little shape instead of hanging like a sack.
2Sleeves that cover the arms — to the wrist

We gave it full-length sleeves that cover the arms down to a ribbed cuff at the wrist. Nothing grips the upper arm, and the cuffs hold instead of sliding down over your hands.
3A soft waffle knit you can feel

We knit it in a soft waffle texture you can see and feel — warm, cozy, and a good deal more interesting than a flat, plain sweatshirt. It is comfort you do not have to apologize for.
4A soft colorblock, like a painting

We gave it a soft colorblock of cream, olive and warm gold, pieced together like a little modern painting rather than one flat color. It is the detail that turns a comfortable top into one people ask you about.
5A little henley placket that lifts it
We finished the neck with a small henley placket and three real buttons — the elevated little touch that takes it from loungewear to something you can wear out of the house. Comfort that does not look like you gave up.
6It fits the body you have
We make the Seraphina from a size S all the way to 5XL and cut it relaxed on purpose. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the sweatshirt.

Why they're clearing it now

They priced the Seraphina at $134.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.
I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had spent years keeping my comfort at home and my presentable clothes for everyone else — and this one soft, easy sweatshirt is finally both at once. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
