A Letter From a Reader

The artful sweater that looks like a gallery piece and wears like a favorite.

On the color-block knit — olive, mustard and black on a bold diagonal — that turns heads, skims instead of clinging, and covers the arms, all as easy to pull on as your comfiest sweater. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.

The Sienna color-block knit sweater
The Sienna — the sweater people always ask me about.

I am 63 years old, and I had quietly resigned myself to sweaters being the dull part of my closet. Warm, sensible, and utterly forgettable — a wall of oatmeal and navy that kept me cozy and made me feel like the furniture. I would put one on and feel warm, and invisible, all at once.

What I wanted was one sweater with a bit of artistry to it — something with real character that still felt like a sweater to wear: soft, warm, easy, forgiving through the middle, covering my arms. Interesting, without being a costume.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant walked in wearing the most striking color-block knit, olive and mustard and black on a bold diagonal, looking like she had stepped out of a gallery. I finally asked her about it. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The sweater is called the Sienna, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1An artful color-block that turns heads

Angled flat lay of the color-block knit sweater on a natural linen background

We split the Sienna on a bold diagonal — olive green, mustard and black meeting on the slant, with a row of black buttons running down the line. It is a genuine piece of design, the sort of sweater people assume came from an expensive little boutique, not a bargain rail.

★★★★★"People ask me about this sweater constantly. It looks like art, and everyone assumes it cost a fortune."Carol R., Charleston SC

2A relaxed cut that skims

The soft knit draping loosely over the body

We cut it with a relaxed, slightly oversized body, so it drapes softly and skims your shape rather than gripping it. All the character of a statement piece, with the easy, forgiving comfort of your favorite everyday sweater.

★★★★★"It skims right over my middle instead of clinging. So striking to look at, and so comfortable I wear it constantly."Diane M., Greenville SC

3A sleeve that covers the arm

The full-length knit sleeve with a ribbed cuff

We gave it a full-length sleeve with room all around, down to a snug ribbed cuff at the wrist. Your arms stay covered and warm, with nothing gripping them anywhere — covered comfort under a bold design.

★★★★★"The sleeves cover my arms properly and the ribbed cuffs stay put. Warm, covered, and it looks wonderful."Linda K., Beaufort SC

4The details that make it

The diagonal seam and off-center black buttons, close up

We put the character in the details — the diagonal seam where the colors meet, the off-center row of black buttons, the asymmetric neckline. Up close it reads as considered and designed, the kind of thing that looks far more expensive than it was.

★★★★★"The diagonal buttons and the off-center design are so clever. It feels like a designer piece, not a plain sweater."Janet S., Bluffton SC

5Soft, warm, and easy to wear

We knit it soft and cozy, and cut it to pull on and go — it works over jeans, striped pants, a plain skirt, whatever you already own. One striking sweater that is as easy as your comfiest one, and dresses up an outfit in a second.

★★★★★"Soft and warm and I just pull it on. It makes even my old jeans look considered. My go-to all winter."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Sienna from a size S all the way to 3XL and cut it with a relaxed, easy body. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the sweater.

★★★★★"I usually dread ordering online at my size. It fit beautifully and skims all the right places."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Sienna at $149.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But my sweaters had kept me warm and invisible for years — and this one striking, easy knit made me feel interesting again without giving up an ounce of comfort. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
