A Letter From a Reader

The hooded knit I throw over everything, in ten colors to live in.

On the oversized hooded knit that skims instead of clinging, covers the arms in a soft wide sleeve, and drapes over anything — with a cozy hood, in ten colors. Why a small South Carolina family made it this way, and why they're clearing it now.

The Thalia oversized hooded knit sweater
The Thalia — the soft, hooded thing I throw on the second it cools.

I am 63 years old, and the piece I reach for most on a cool evening is the big, soft, cozy knit I can wrap myself in over whatever I already have on. The trouble was that every one I owned made me look like I had given up — a shapeless heap of wool with a person somewhere inside it.

What I wanted was that cozy comfort in something that still looked like I had chosen it, with a hood for the chill and a color I actually liked. It seemed a small thing to ask, and yet nothing I found managed all three at once.

Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant came in from a cool evening in the softest hooded knit, draped and easy, and looked wonderful in it. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first.

The Clarke family runs a small boutique here in South Carolina, family-run since 1986 — three generations, mother to daughter. The sweater is called the Thalia, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

1Drapes like a poncho, and it skims

The oversized sweater draping softly like a poncho

We cut the Thalia oversized and let it drape like a poncho, so it falls softly over you and skims your shape rather than gripping it anywhere. All the ease of a big cozy knit, but it drapes elegantly instead of hanging like a heap.

★★★★★"It drapes so softly and skims right over my middle. Cozy and easy, and never a shapeless lump."Diane M., Greenville SC

2A soft wide sleeve that covers the arm

The soft wide sleeve covering the top of the arm

We gave it a soft, wide sleeve that covers the top of the arm with room all around, gathering into a ribbed cuff. Covered where it counts, roomy and easy, with nothing gripping the arm anywhere.

★★★★★"The wide sleeves cover the tops of my arms with room to spare. Comfortable, and just what I wanted."Linda K., Beaufort SC

3A cozy hood to pull up

The soft knit hood with its drawstring

We added a soft knit hood with a drawstring you can pull up on a cool evening, or leave to sit easy at the shoulders. It is the cozy touch that makes it the thing you throw on and never quite want to take off.

★★★★★"The hood is so cozy pulled up on a cool night. It has become the thing I reach for every evening."Janet S., Bluffton SC

4Soft, cozy, and feels far dearer

We knit it soft and cozy in a fine, comforting yarn that feels lovely against the skin and warm without weight. The kind of knit you reach for the moment the mornings turn cool, and never quite want to take off.

★★★★★"So soft and warm, and it feels far dearer than it is. I have practically lived in it since it arrived."Carol R., Charleston SC

5Ten colors, one for every mood

Angled flat lay of the hooded sweater in several colors on linen

We make it in ten colors, from this green to soft pink, camel, navy, wine and more — more shades than almost anything in your closet, so there is one for every mood and every pair of jeans. A woman is bound to ask you where you found it.

★★★★★"A woman asked me where I got it the first day I wore it. At 63, I had forgotten what that felt like."Patricia L., Columbia SC

6It fits the body you have

We make the Thalia from a size S all the way to 5XL and cut it generously oversized on purpose. It is meant to fit the woman — not make the woman fit the sweater.

★★★★★"I usually dread ordering knitwear online at my size. It fit like it was made for me."Maureen T., Summerville SC

Why they're clearing it now

The Clarke family outside their South Carolina boutique

They priced the Thalia at $139.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back to the women who have kept their doors open since 1986 — so every one is going out at less than half of that.

I ordered mine that evening. It arrived a few days later in a kraft-paper parcel with a short handwritten note from the family. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since.

I do not usually write things like this. But I had spent too many cool evenings choosing between a cozy knit that swamped me and a smart one that was not warm — and this soft hooded one is finally both. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your color before it clears.
