A Letter From a Reader Vanessa S
The one dress that makes me feel like myself again.
On the Vanessa — the long-sleeved burgundy midi that skims instead of clings, covers the arms fully, and goes from a Tuesday errand to a Saturday dinner without changing a thing.
I am 63 years old, and I had quietly stopped buying dresses. Not because I didn't want to wear them — but because every one I tried either left my arms bare or felt too fussy to actually live in. So I stopped trying and went back to the same dark slacks and cardigans, season after season.
It wore on me more than I let on. I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.
Then a woman in my church group here in Mount Pleasant kept turning up looking comfortable and quietly put-together at the same time. I finally asked her. She laughed and told me to read the Clarke family's letter first, so I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.
1A cut that skims — never clings, never sacks

We gave the Vanessa a ruched crossover bodice that draws gently at the waist — just enough to give a shape — then let the skirt fall away in a soft, full A-line that never grips the middle and never hangs like a bag. It moves with you, which is all you want a dress to do.
2Long sleeves that cover fully — and still look polished
The Vanessa has full-length sleeves that come all the way to the wrist — covering the upper arm entirely, in a smooth fabric that sits beautifully without pulling or bunching. No cardigan needed. No reaching for something to throw over it when you step out. You are covered from the moment you put it on.
3A neckline with just enough — and not a bit more

The surplice V-neckline opens gracefully at the front, with the soft ruching gathered at the crossover point to hold everything in place. It doesn't gape when you lean, doesn't tug when you move, and doesn't need a camisole underneath. A neckline that looks considered without needing to be managed.
4From Tuesday errands to Saturday supper — one dress

The deep burgundy and the clean, unbroken line of the Vanessa mean it reads differently depending on what you do with it — plain and comfortable for a morning out, quietly dressed-up for an evening in. Two women in our church group have now worn theirs to a birthday supper. It is the kind of dress that removes a decision from your week.
5A hem that stays long — and lets you stop thinking about it

The skirt falls below the knee in a soft hi-lo sweep — long enough that you never once think about it, short enough in the front that you can walk freely. It catches the air when you move. On a woman who has spent years in slacks because dresses felt like a problem to manage, that matters more than it sounds.
6A color that works — for every occasion you already have
Deep burgundy is the shade that goes with the shoes you have, the bag you already own, and the evening you didn't plan for. It is rich without being loud and dark enough to wear all autumn and winter without looking out of place anywhere. We cut it this way because a dress you reach for is worth more than one that only works once.

Why they're clearing it now
They priced the Vanessa at $157.00 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for America's 250th, the Clarke family wanted to give something back — so every dress is going out at well below half of what it was.
I ordered mine that same evening. It arrived a few days later folded in cream tissue paper with a short note from the family tucked on top. I have reached for it more than anything else in my closet since — and I have not touched a cardigan once while wearing it.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years feeling covered-up in the wrong way — hidden, not dressed. The Vanessa is the first dress in years that made me feel like I had actually made a choice I was glad of. If that sounds familiar, I hope you find your size before it clears.
