I am 63 and my whole day is a series of small temperature changes. The house at seven, which is cold. The car, which is warm. The store, which is freezing. The parking lot again. Back home, where somebody has turned the heat up.

And almost everything I own has exactly one answer to all of that. A sweater is a sweater — you are wearing it or you are carrying it. A full zip is barely better: it is on or it is off, and taking it off means finding somewhere to put it.

It was my daughter Sarah, up in Boston, who said what I needed was something with more than two positions, and pointed me at a small family boutique here in South Carolina. Before I tell you what it did, I think you should read the Clarke family's letter first.

1A half zip is a dial, not a switch

The zip runs from the top of the collar down to the middle of your chest and stops. That short run is the whole idea. All the way up and the collar closes around your throat. Halfway and it opens into a V. All the way down and the collar falls back on itself. Three or four settings in one garment, and you change them without taking anything off or putting anything down.

When you pull a zip all the way up, the collar goes against your neck — and a plain lined collar at your throat is the reason most women stop before the top. So we lined this one with thick cream sherpa on the inside. Zipped shut it is soft where it touches you, and folded open it shows, which is the other half of why it is there.

3The band is woven, not printed on

Run a thumb across the patterned band and you can feel it — the motifs are woven into a separate strip and set in, so they stand slightly above the surface. A printed pattern is ink lying on cloth, and it cracks along the folds and fades in the wash. A woven one is the fabric itself. It costs more and it will still be there in five years.

4One pocket, and you get in from either side

Not two pockets — one large pouch across the front, open at both sides. Which means both hands go into the same warm space and meet in the middle, and there is nothing to hunt for. It is also the one pocket shape that never gapes or pulls the front of a garment out of line, because it is stitched down along the bottom rather than hanging from a slit.

5The line across you sits high

The navy stops and the tan begins up at chest height, and the patterned band marks exactly that join. Which matters, because a horizontal line drawn across a body is only a problem when it lands at the middle of you. Up at the chest it reads as a yoke — the same place a stripe sits on a good ski sweater, and for the same reason.

6One colorway, and a size for you — S to 3XL

The Zyrel is made in one combination only — navy over tan, with the woven band between them. That is not us running out of options; the whole design is that pairing, and there is no version of it in a single color. Sizes run S, M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL, cut roomy enough to go over a shirt, so take your usual size.
